# Segments

Group customers into segments, including by customer group, so you can run targeted campaigns and personalize storefront content from Management Dashboard.

The **Customer Segments** feature lets you group customers based on shared factors so you can run targeted marketing campaigns and personalize storefront content.

In the **Segments** module, you can create, edit, and manage the segments in your system. You can add individual customers as members, or assign a customer group so every member of that group is included.

## Creating a segment

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Choose to create a segment

Go to **Customer Management** -> **Segments** and choose **Create New Segment**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Provide segment details

In the **Details** tab, choose the site the segment applies to and enter the basic details, such as ID, name, and description.

{% hint style="warning" %}
You can set a customer segment ID in the **Id** field. Otherwise, a unique ID is automatically generated when the segment is created.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Set activation

To activate the segment immediately, switch the **Active** toggle on. The toggle is off by default. Turn it on when you are ready to use the segment.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save the segment

Choose **Save** to create the segment in the system. After you save, you can continue editing it.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Assigning products or categories

Assign products or categories to a segment when you want to promote specific items to segment members, for example in a marketing campaign.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the Products/Categories tab

Go to the **Products/Categories** tab.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Select products or categories

From the available products and categories, select the items to assign to the segment. The items you choose appear in the **Selected Objects** panel.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-78e82434d981b7fe74956939b863295f743f8271%2Fsegment_products.png?alt=media" alt="Segment products"><figcaption><p>Segment products</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d8deedb9c03fff9d2e81c6ec914159d236d2ca5a%2Fsegment_categories.png?alt=media" alt="Segment categories"><figcaption><p>Segment categories</p></figcaption></figure>

You can assign multiple products and categories at once.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save your selection

Choose **Save** to confirm the assignment.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Adding coupons

You can assign discount coupons to a segment so that only customers who belong to the segment receive a special price or discount on the assigned products or categories. Coupon eligibility includes customers added as members and customers who inherit the segment through an assigned customer group.

You can also set segment eligibility when you create or edit a coupon: in the coupon **Rules** tab, choose **Customer segment(s)** under **Applies to**. For individual accounts instead of a segment, use **Specific customer(s)** on that same tab. See [Coupons](/user-guides/management-dashboard/customer-management/coupons.md#creating-a-coupon).

If you assigned specific products or categories to the segment, the coupon is valid only for those items.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the Coupons tab

Go to the **Coupons** tab. The list shows available coupons and excludes coupons that have a category restriction.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Select coupon codes

Choose a coupon code from the list to apply it to the segment. The selected coupons appear in the selected coupons panel.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-4c271aad3e5b9f1a97553774655e008936e4d6dd%2Fsegment_coupons.png?alt=media" alt="Segment coupons"><figcaption><p>Segment coupons</p></figcaption></figure>

You can select several coupons for a segment. At cart level, customers can apply all of the coupons.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save your selection

Choose **Save** to confirm your choice.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The assigned coupon works only for the products and categories defined in the segment, and only for customers who belong to the segment. The coupon is also legal-entity-aware: if a customer belongs to more than one legal entity, the coupon applies only to the legal entity chosen for the segment.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Applying segment-related coupons to a cart**

A customer belongs to several customer segments that have different products assigned. The customer receives a coupon related to the *Bosch* segment, which applies a discount only to the defined products. The customer shops for Bosch products and also buys other items assigned to a different segment. When they apply the coupon code in the cart, the coupon is validated and the discount is applied only to the Bosch products.
{% endhint %}

### Assigning members

When you create a segment, you can add existing customers as segment members.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the Members tab

Go to the **Members** tab and choose **Add New Member**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Select customers

Find and select the relevant customers, then confirm with **Add Member**.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7c47a541d4834cc74f14b7527d9697b4735cfd04%2Fsegment_members.png?alt=media" alt="Segment members"><figcaption><p>Segment members</p></figcaption></figure>

If a customer is assigned to more than one company, choose which company to add to the segment.

All assigned customers are visible in the list.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e2a61960e413d90fb00231457713575107260167%2Fsegment_members_list.png?alt=media" alt="Segment members list"><figcaption><p>Segment members list</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
Segment information is also visible at the customer level. If a customer is assigned to a segment, you can see the associated segment on the customer details page.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save the segment

Choose **Save** to confirm the member assignments.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Assigning groups

You can assign a customer group to a segment so every member of that group receives the segment's products, categories, and coupons. This is useful in B2B scenarios where you want to target a whole role or buying team — for example every Buyer in a company — without adding each customer separately.

When a customer joins a group that is assigned to a segment, they inherit that segment automatically.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the Groups tab

Go to the **Groups** tab and choose **Add New Group**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Select customer groups

Find and select the relevant customer groups, then confirm your selection.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-9cd7b9fd8138953d1464557f359220d41574b53d%2Fsegments_groups.png?alt=media" alt="Segment groups"><figcaption><p>Assigning customer groups to a segment</p></figcaption></figure>

The assigned groups appear in the list with their name and ID.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save the segment

Choose **Save** to confirm the group assignments.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
For more information about customer groups, see [Groups](/user-guides/management-dashboard/customer-management/customer-groups.md).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
A storefront can consume segment information and display only the dedicated products or categories for logged-in customers who belong to the segment, either as individual members or through an assigned customer group. For details on how to connect segment information on your storefront, see the [Customer Segment Service Tutorials](/api-documentation/api-guides/companies-and-customers/customer-segments/segments.md).
{% endhint %}

## Removing products or categories

To remove a product or a category from a segment, go to the **Products/Categories** tab and choose **x** next to the selected object. The object is no longer connected to the segment.

## Unassigning customers

To remove a customer from a segment, go to the **Members** tab and choose **x** next to the selected customer.

You can also remove several customers at once. Select the checkboxes next to the customers and choose **Delete**.

## Unassigning groups

To remove a customer group from a segment, go to the **Groups** tab and choose **x** next to the selected group.

You can also remove several groups at once. Select the checkboxes next to the groups and choose **Unassign**.

## Audit Logs

The **Audit Logs** tab shows the history of changes for this segment, including what changed and when, with field-level previous and updated values. Actors can include named users, anonymous storefront activity, or system actions.

<figure><img src="https://3057647601-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbTY7EwZtYYQYC6GOcdTj%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-b8de8a25395303797ad4eecdb771b3eac096c9d4%2Fal_segment.png?alt=media" alt="Segment Audit Logs tab"><figcaption><p>Segment Audit Logs tab</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
For the tenant-wide audit history, see [Audit Logs](/user-guides/management-dashboard/administration/audit-logs.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://developer.emporix.io/user-guides/management-dashboard/customer-management/segments.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
