# Directories

Organize value streams into directories so you can group related processes and filter the list by category.

Directories group value streams into categories, similar to folders. Use them to keep related processes together, for example returns, product onboarding, or order fulfillment, and to filter the **Value Streams** list when the number of processes grows.

You create and manage directories in a dedicated view, then assign them to value streams from the **Value Streams** list. A value stream can belong to more than one directory.

## Creating and managing directories

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open Directories

On the **Value Streams** view, choose **Manage Directories**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Create a directory

Choose **Create Directory**. Provide a **Name** and, optionally, a **Description** that explains what the directory is for.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

You can edit a directory with the pencil icon or delete it with the trash icon.

## Assigning directories to a value stream

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the actions menu

On the **Value Streams** view, choose the three dots icon next to the value stream.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Assign directories

Choose **Assign directories**. Search for or choose one or more directories.

<figure><img src="https://1024162941-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrSc4haeKWrTrOPHzdrMO%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-dadd3b6e43296e32d63ecca9bab4f74888250e75%2Fassigning_directories.png?alt=media" alt="Assign directories dialog with searchable directory checkboxes"><figcaption><p>Assigning directories to a value stream from the actions menu</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Filtering by directory

On the **Value Streams** view, use the **Directories** column filter. The default is **All directories**. Choose a directory to show only the value streams assigned to it.

The same directory structure is available in the [Value Streams Debugger](/vsm-guides/troubleshooting/value-streams-debugger.md). In the **Instances** list, use the **Directory** column to filter running process instances by directory. The default is **All directories**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://developer.emporix.io/vsm-guides/value-streams/directories.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
